About this service
Paths get treated as an afterthought more often than any other part of a garden, which is why so many of them sink at the edges, hold puddles, or disappear under grass within a couple of seasons. The failure is nearly always the same: not enough sub-base, and no proper edge restraint.
We build paths the same way we build driveways, scaled to the traffic they will take. That means excavating to a proper depth, compacting a MOT Type 1 sub-base, and restraining both edges — because a path with unrestrained edges spreads outwards and drops, however good the surface on top of it is.
We will also make sure the path is wide enough for what it is for. A route to a bin store needs to take a wheelie bin without scraping the planting; a path alongside a house needs room to carry something past without turning sideways. It is worth deciding that before the edges are set in concrete.

Our process
Route & Width
We mark the route out on the ground and check the width against what it needs to carry — bins, a wheelbarrow, two people side by side.
Excavation
We dig to the depth the surface and traffic require, removing roots and soft material that would settle later.
Sub-Base
A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is laid in layers, giving the path the same foundation discipline as a driveway.
Edge Restraint
Both edges are restrained so the path cannot spread. This is the single most common thing missing from a path that has failed.
Surfacing & Jointing
The chosen surface is laid to falls and jointed, then the whole run is cleaned down and checked end to end for level.
